GROW Decatur County Foundation

The Foundation became an affiliate of Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation in November 2016 upon establishing their newly formed community foundation.  An affiliate is a collection of community funds to increase philanthropic giving in a geographic area. Both endowed and non-endowed funds are developed to provide financial support to 501(c)(3) and other qualifying non-profit organizations and for charitable purposes to benefit area residents.

Their logo “GROW” stands for Growing Rural Opportunities Within; a motto they feel very strongly about and have a passion to pursue for the betterment of Decatur County. GROW Decatur County Foundation gives residents an opportunity to invest in their community through wills, trusts, life insurance and gifts. It benefits the giver, the gift is forever and every dollar is used to benefit Decatur County.

Foundation Funds:

  • Dane G. Hansen Foundation Community Grant Fund for Decatur County

To date, Decatur County is one of 26 counties in northwest Kansas that has been awarded 14 rounds of $50,000 grants from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, with 12 of those county funds established through the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation. This grant fund was established in March 2015 to allow qualifying 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations; or educational, governmental or religious institutes per IRS, to apply for funding assistance for projects intended for Decatur County benefit. Qualifying entities may apply online; grants are awarded through a competitive application process.  The Hansen Foundation has guaranteed additional rounds of funding to continue through 2025, providing continual county-wide participation in the Decatur County Strategic Doing Initiative, but this funding will adjust to $25,000 increments as of April 2022.  For criteria and application information, click here.

  • Flora Elizabeth Boutz Edwards Endowment Scholarship Fund

This Scholarship was first made available to 2018 graduates of Decatur Community Schools in Oberlin. This permanent scholarship will continue to support Decatur Community Schools annually through the generous benefit and forward thinking efforts of Ms. Edwards.

  • GROW Decatur County Community Initiative Fund

Thanks to a generous donor, this Fund was established to provide additional grant funding opportunities for the good of Decatur County.  Oversight and awards will be at the discretion of the GDCF board.

  • GROW Decatur County Foundation Fund

In November 2016, the GROW Decatur County Foundation Fund was established through utilizing a matching campaign initiative offered through the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.  Incoming donations into this endowment fund were matched $1 for $1 up to $50,000.  The Decatur County communities, alumni and friends, stepped up to the challenge and exceeded their portion of the incoming contributions by more than double; raising approximately $115,000 prior to adding in the Hansen’s $50,000 match.  In subsequent years, local support came through and the fund has since passed the $700,000 mark! As this endowment fund continues to grow, a percentage of the fund balance will be made available annually to benefit Decatur County through grants dollars to help support projects throughout the county and communities within.

Grant applications from the GROW Decatur County Foundation Fund accepted between February 1 and December 1 annually. Application details and guidelines can be found online at

Other Funds:

  • GROW Decatur County Foundation Operating Fund
  • GROW Decatur County Foundation Operating Endowment Fund
  • Donor Advised Funds (DAF’s)

Donors receive charitable gift receipts for the contributions to their established DAF.  The fund is normally named in someone’s memory or established as a “Family Fund”, however, the donor(s) may personalize as they wish.  The donor(s) are setup as the advisors to their Fund, which allows them to make all grant recommendations from their DAF.  Grant recommendations must be to qualifying charitable 501(c)(3) organizations, educational, government or religious entities per IRS rules.  The donor(s) may name succeeding generations as successor advisors or transition it to the Foundation to advise over upon donor(s) death.
